Why this role matters

The role holder will be part of a solution design and build team responsible for design and build and on-going enhancements to a secure internet gateway protecting a major BT customer.

The role holder will be responsible for detailed design and delivery of gateway components consisting of network and firewall devices, web and proxy servers, and web and email content inspection and filtering devices.

BT undertakes the complete outsourcing of customers’ network and security client infrastructures, with varying technologies, size, and complexity and therefore the post holder needs to have a broad knowledge of firewalls, Proxy servers, IDS systems and network and system security hardware and software. In addition they need knowledge of other relevant security technologies and processes, e.g. encryption and authentication methods/methodologies.

What you'll be doing

  • Would normally lead on a specific deliverable of a small/medium scale project to achieve required business benefits and manage to budget, timescales and quality.

  • Implementing solutions in line with defined standards and processes within agreed timeframes.

  • To input to cost/timescale solutions/options for the work packages owned.

  • Work with project management community to support project planning phase.

  • Maintain a very good understanding of key products – Keep relevant certifications up to date, attending BT product and technology seminars and briefings.

  • Workings with the team, possibly indirectly manage people to deliver specific tasks or projects.

  • Assists transformation strategy for a network or technology discipline in own area of expertise.

  • To contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures.

  • To work with the operational support team to ensure delivered work packages are understood and accepted by the Ops team.

  • Influence high level design decisions to ensure capability of service is exploited.

  • Responsible for delivery against plan

  • Long term experience and exposure within the Security arena and to a lesser extent the network arena.

  • Good customer relationship skills, able to build and maintain relationships with the most senior levels, both externally and internally.

  • Practical working knowledge of security technologies.

  • Self-motivated and require little management

The candidate should have technical/practical working knowledge and understanding in one or more of the following technologies:

  • In depth understanding of TCP/IP

  • Practical working knowledge of:

  • Firewalls (Cisco ASA, Juniper, Palo Alto)

  • Proxies (Bluecoat, Webwasher)

  • Anti-Virus (McAfee, Symantec, Kaspersky)

  • Web Content Inspection (Websense, Smartfilter)

  • Email Filtering and anti-spam technologies (MailSweeper/MimeSweeper, Secure Mail)

  • Network and Application Load Balancers (Alteon SLB & GSLB)

  • HP hardware, including Solaris virtualisation

  • DNS, LDAP, NTP, Sendmail, and Web servers (Apache)

  • Network Storage (NetApp)

  • SSL VPN (Juniper, Cisco ASA, etc.)

  • Intrusion Detection/Protection system (Snort, Sourcefire)

  • Operating Systems (Solaris/Linux/VMWare)

  • Programming (Shell Scripting, Perl, PHP, C / C , Python, Visual Basic, SQL)

  • Installation experience, including cabling and racking of servers

  • May have a degree or equivalent in IT, Engineering, or Science

  • Hold relevant industry certifications for firewall, proxy, and other gateway security products (with hands on experience and technical knowledge).

  • Will have achieved certification as a CISSP or A.Inst.ISP member (Desirable)

  • Hold and maintain an adequate security clearance in accordance with the requirements of the role (current minimum standard is SC).
