Commercial Lawyer (Bids and Transactions)

Why this role matters

You will be responsible for advising and providing professional support on specialist legal matters that affect the organisation. Particular emphasis will be on drafting/negotiation of complex multijurisdictional supply contracts with customer’s in house and external legal counsel and project managing legal and commercial activities in support of complex multijurisdictional bids and tenders, as well as supporting senior legal advisors on larger, more complex bids.

In certain areas, subject to the approval of the General Counsel, you may act as a single point of contact, by providing advice, or where appropriate, making executive decisions, on the legal impact of commercial matters or the commercial implications of legal advice. You may be responsible for advising on specialist matters affecting BT, with particular emphasis on commercial and legal issues arising in multijurisdictional complex transactions.

What you'll be doing

•Representing the company in complex, frequently multi-jurisdictional, contract negotiations with customers, distributors or suppliers where necessary.

•Identifying commercial risks arising either from proposed contracts, offerings or product development/expansion, providing appropriate solutions/alternatives.

•Preparing and presenting high quality complex briefings and recommendations to BT Legal management (Senior Lawyer and above).

•Working across business units within the affected areas, understanding the legal aspects of problems that arise and dealing with them in an efficient way.

•Negotiating and concluding business transactions on behalf of BT on terms that are acceptable to the business.

•Anticipating legal developments relevant to the business and provide advice on their impact.

•Engaging with legal specialists in relation to data protection and other compliance legislation, where appropriate.

•Offering to help others in relation to capacity management and/or sharing knowledge, contributing to the performance of the team.

Qualified lawyer in England and Wales or an equivalent jurisdiction (or qualified by experience with a comparable professional qualification).

•Will have knowledge and relevant experience in commercial matters, covering a range of activities.

•Strong drafting and communication skills.

•Ability to interface at an appropriate level with all internal stakeholders, as appropriate.

•Strong customer facing skills and ability to interface with customer executives, as required.
