Why this role matters

The Product Strategy team has a critical role to play as we continue to shape and deliver our 'One BT' plan, and strengthen the alignment of our Product Strategy. In a rapidly changing environment, it is critical that we take a more integrated approach to how we drive value out of our assets and transform our business.

This role is responsible for setting the product strategy for Converged Connectivity by developing a compelling top down vision which will define a strategic product framework. It will hold accountability for leading on the definition and delivery of the strategy and will be accountable for delivering a set of outputs and making decisions across multiple time frames:

  • Long term – understand trends/insight to set a compelling vision and ambition for the future articulated by a strategic product framework and roadmap. The role will shape the future product strategy and seek to influence the environment to ensure we can redefine the rules to maximise value.

  • Medium term – the role sets the market size and recommends our volume and value ambition. It will identify new opportunities for investment and manage the product lifecycle and capex investment appropriately to deliver against the vision and address customer needs through differentiation to deliver sustainable growth.

  • Short term – the role will perform a strategic annual review whilst monitoring execution against the product strategic framework. It will set out the group response to strategic events in year, decide on product launch/withdrawal opportunities, arbitrate cross business unit conflict and seek to identify optimisation opportunities.

What you'll be doing

  • Set the group product strategy and define the product strategic framework.

  • Set and manage the strategic product roadmap across all market segments, refresh on an annual basis as part of the planning process.

  • To take the lead in the creation of converged bundles and solutions for the Consumer and SME markets working with other members of the Product Strategy & Portfolio team to integrate Services,Applications and Content.

  • Set market sizing for product group across all market segments.

  • Recommends volume & value ambition for the product group through a strategic review process with ExCo.

  • Set the strategic pricing framework to ensure ROI on product investment is underpinned and manage product profitability across the lifecycle.

  • Set the group product capex allocation per business unit and product development prioritisation through the Investment Board.

  • Recommend business cases for new strategic product ideas, engaging and collaborating with business units to validate the opportunity. Ensures we build scalable and repeatable product capability that can be leveraged across multiple markets and segments.

  • Decide on the group response to strategic events (including business case) in year.

  • Decide on cross business arbitration and optimisation opportunities in year.

  • Decide on major product launch or withdrawal in year (where the item is not on the strategic roadmap or requires capex funding).

  • Provide customer input from the group on Openreach access strategy.

  • Experience of aligning Product Strategy to Business Strategy.

  • High level of commercial expertise required including understanding of product P&L, unit economics, profitability and product lifecycle management.

  • Insight driven - requires a sharp customer focus and external orientation to bring new ideas and thinking. Needs to be highly analytical and comfortable operating across multiple market channels and segments (B2B, B2C and Wholesale).

  • Strong presentation skills, capable of articulating complex ideas with authority and making the case for change. Must be experienced presenting at Board level.

  • Experience of formulating product strategy and plans.

  • Operating experience in a customer facing commercial/product/marketing role preferred.

  • Strong product understanding required for each category covered, but does not need to an expert in all given breadth of the role.

  • Strong team player, needs to lead and influence across business.

  • Excellent and broad understanding of the markets BT is playing in and their key drivers.
